If you want Carbon Emacs and aspell from MacPorts to cooperate, you'll have to jump through some hoops. This is because Carbon Emacs tries to be way too smart, by including options to automatically download extra dictionaries. However, it doesn't supply that for my own language, Dutch. Luckily, MacPorts contains a package providing that dictionary, but accessing that was somewhat cumbersome.

Forcing Carbon Emacs to use MacPorts aspell
After a lot of frustation and digging deeper into the jungle of lisp, I was able to get it to work with the following two lines inserted in my emacs configuration file:
(setq ispell-program-name "/opt/local/bin/aspell")
(setenv "ASPELL_CONF" nil)
The first one of these two lines is well documented, the second is missing on my version of the internet. Now it works flawlessly! Now to make life even better if you're using LaTeX with babel, go and download flyspell-babel from Peter Heslin's homepage and add the following two lines to your setup:
(autoload 'flyspell-babel-setup "flyspell-babel")
(add-hook 'latex-mode-hook 'flyspell-babel-setup)
Now Emacs will automagically select the right language for your flyspell session! Makes my day!
